Learning Outcome #4
Peer review is something that I personally believe we did not do enough of in high school. We had classes in high school dedicated to writing. Once we finished writing, which typically only included the same few students that are fast writers, we then got to peer review. This kind seemed like it was just a way to fill up the rest of the class and not everyone even got to peer review. The few times we actually did get to peer review, I think it was spent reviewing the wrong thing. Rather than truly reading our peers papers and digging in and finding deep things to correct, we would typically just make note of the small obvious grammatical errors. Coming into my first college English class and learning exactly how important and beneficial peer editing can be was extremely eye opening. It was challenging at first to truly understand what to do as it was so new, but after experiencing the first one and talking with peers and hearing their honest opinions was so helpful. Something we do after physically reviewing and making comments on our peers papers is spending at least 10 minutes or so discussing our comments. We will explain to each other what our comments mean and why we think they should make them. It is a great time to ask questions and I found this whole process very helpful.
